started a new topic: Termination of Route 1 Corridor Shuttle declared from Fall '09- Want to stop it? on 6/24/09 9:31 AM |
HI, This is Tania, GSG representative and ex- UMD grad senator. I am currently working (with support of Grad Student Govt.) on the issue of letting our UMD Dept. of Transportation (or DOTS) know of our inconvenience if the Route 1 Corridor shuttle is terminated from Fall '09. For that I am drafting a letter which requires signatures from as many students as possible for making our voice heard. As you know Route 1 Corridor gives an easy access to many places on Route 1, including IKEA, USDA etc and provides a second option to Seven Springs and CP downtown shuttle routes; terminating this service will cause inconvenience to many. Here is a route map to all the places the shuttle covers: http://www.transportation.umd.edu/routes/schedules/summer%2009%20web/Route%201%20Corridor_Summer09.pdf If you are the person also going to be affected by this termination, or you want to help other students in need of this shuttle service then please join us in signing the letter to DOTS (deadline June 29th). 1 signature may make all the difference. Also please ask your friends and collegues for their support Hurry! Just email me at trulytania@gmail.com and I will reach you at your convenience to get your signature. Waiting to hear from you ASAP! Best Tania |

What is this Omnibus bill? I have heard about it but have not seen it. If the SGA is transparent, why doesn't the bill come out in the 3 week reading calendar that I have come to understand that SGA has. What is the President, or whoever writes the bill, trying to sneak in? | Reply » |

The bill calling for a statement of support by the sga in favor of Open source textbooks has not been posted on the website. It went through 1st reading last week, and 2nd and 3rd reading (where it was subsequently passed) last night. Yet, it is still not listed on the "legislation" section of the SGA website. |

Allie, thank you for your concern. Fortunately, the University just commissioned a Bicycling Master Plan that will serve as a guiding document for creating a more bike-friendly campus over the next 5 years. The plan prioritizes quick and easy fixes such as bike lanes, shelters, the widening of paths, and signage. There is actually a recommendation in the plan that specifically addresses the safety issues at the intersection behind the Stamp near the hill. Within the next year or so, we will see this area fixed. The plan has not yet been made public, but I expect that it will be online within the next few months. If you'd like to learn more about what the SGA is doing for biking please feel free to contact me at jcalabre@umd.edu | Reply » |

The intersection behind the Stamp Student Union building is dangerous for bikers. Once they cross from North Campus (Diner, Denton Community, Ellicott Community, etc.) down past the Stadium and up the hill, there is no easy way to cross the road (Fieldhouse Dr.). In order for bikers to cross, they have to dismount in the middle of the intersection to pick up their bikes and move them onto the curb or bike to the next intersection that has a handicap access spot. It seems like an easy fix and would really improve campus safety and transportation. | Reply » |
